Sepia Saturday 162 - young lads with caps on their heads

Is it possible to post too much in one day?

Post, for tomorrow ye may die...or some such.

Anyway, I love this photo but please don't ask me for any details.

It was in my grandfather's album so I am hazarding a guess that it was taken in Bathurst or Orange in the early 1900s.

What these lads were doing I have no idea...feel free to extemporise....

Hanging about on a Sunday I reckon.

Over to you.

This was in honour of Sepia Saturday....

Great photo, full of interesting characters (or little Herberts)

Two suggestions; Kids on School at playtime or an itinerant photographer has it in town and rounded up a bunch of urchins for a picture to sell (to parents or local paper)

It is indeed a wonderful image, worth extemporising on. It seems to have been taken rather early or late in the day, considering the length of the shadows. The lad with a stick is clearly up to no good - he has guilty written all over his face. They've probably been having a game of football after school, with the girls relegated to the small verandah of the one-room school. A guess, of course, but you did ask ...

Tony - it does look like an egg doesn't it? I wish I could say I can see my Grandfather in that photo but I can't...but it's a great photo...I love it.

Mike - I think you may be correct - kids at playtime - isn't it fun?

Oooh Brett - you are good...long shadows and all that...yes indeed...I think you may be on to something...well done...

Could it be autumn? The leaves on the left hand side of the tree seem to have partly gone. And the boy with the "egg", could it be a fruit of some kind, a watermelon? Next to the chimney there seems to be a giant barrel. But no matter what, the picture is very nice!

It is indeed a wonderful old photograph and for Sepia Saturday to spread it around amongst lovers of old photographs - the honour is all ours.

Oh Peter - you do make me chortle...the leaves do seem to have partly gone don't they...completely almost....and yes lets upgrade that from an egg to a watermelon :)

A fine photo for a group told to keep out of mischief before everyone goes to church.
What a great photo! I can't figure it out though ... all boys? Is that a school, all boarded up? What is that boy in front holding?

Thanks for sharing it with us. I am your newest follower, and welcome to Sepia Saturday.

Yes, butter wouldn't melt in their mouths eh Bob? A finer cast for Oliver I've yet to see.

Hi Kathy - a very warm welcome and thank you for following my 'umble blog. Yes, what is that boy holding? It looks like a misshapen boulder in a sheeps's stomach, doesn't it?
