#52Ancestorsin52Weeks 30/52 Owen/John McLoughlin ?

My maternal grandfather Tom McLoughlin at the end of the back row on the right 1912 This week is going to be a very short post indeed.  Normally I have quite a swag of material about each of my ancestors but this is where my McLoughlin stops as it were. I wanted to write today about Patrick McLoughlin's father Owen McLoughlin.  I wrote about Patrick back in May here. Patrick's death certificate says that his parents were Owen McLoughlin and Bridget Sweeney. On his marriage certificate it states that his father's name was Owen McLoughlin and that he was a labourer. The only birth I have been able to find to a Bridget Sweeney and a McLoughlin is a Patrick to a John McLaughlin and Bridget Sweeney in Templeboy, Sligo as per this blogpost here .  Now - the question is if this John is also known as Owen.   What do you think? Is it too big a leap? There's a bit of me that says let's go back to basics and remind ourselves of what the original research question wa...

Patrick McLoughlin Patrick McLOUGHLIN – c 1836 - 1897 Ahnentafel Number 24 Context for discovery: This biography was written as part of the 52 ancestors in 52 weeks exercise devised by Amy Johnson Crow.  You can join in too here. The theme for this month is Check It Out and the theme for this week is Social. Amy says: Maybe you have a story or photo of an ancestor at an ice cream social. Maybe your ancestor was part of a society, like the Masons or Odd Fellows. Maybe you've made a connection with a cousin or made a great discovery thanks to social media. Whatever it is, write it down!   When I was a girl (said in a quavering voice), we didn't have dances at school, we had socials. Just saying.  When I searched my blog for social I came up with various phrases about social evils e.g. drunkeness, social aspirations and social media.  Or Friendly Societies.  The closest I could find to link to Patrick was the Broughton Catholic Charitable Society and I...

Margaret McLoughlin - Sodwalls/Bathurst

Margaret McLoughlin Communion Memento "Where does the time go?" I ask myself on numerous occasions, as no doubt, do you... Do you remember your first Communion? I remember mine...but only because it was relatively recent i.e. as an adult in my mid thirties.  Crikey!  That's nearly twenty years ago now.... Anyway, back to Margaret McLoughlin's first communion.   The picture above shows a rather quaint treasure that I inherited from my mother.  I'm not quite sure how she came about it but it is kept in a drawer of her old desk with a bunch of photos and other stuff I have accumulated over the years.   I am intrigued by it because it shows the date of her death.   I have so many questions about this.  Who created this memento?  I suspect Margaret.  Maybe a grown-up helped her with the lettering.  Who filled it in after she died?  Is this usual?  Who kept it?  Probably her poor p...
