Week 3 #nfhm2017 Blogging Challenge - All the Rivers Run

Image
Having possibly bored everybody (including myself) to death with the last post, you will be pleased to know I'm going to keep this one short and sweet. I've decided to list all the rivers that might have a connection to my ancestors (oh and me too - why not?) And here is a suitable literary quote... “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”  ― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows Here they are in alphabetical order with pictures wherever possible and the surname/s of the family/ies I am researching afterwards: Afon Seiont, North Caernarvon, Wales - JONES (Afon  means river in Welsh) Welsh Countryside by Nelo Hotsuma from Flickr - some rights reserved Aray River, Inverary, Scotland - SINCLAIR Inverary Castle and River Aray by David Jones on Flickr - some rights reserved Brisbane River, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia - DAW, CONNER Grey Street Brid...

Tingalpa Chapel  Once again, my weekly post seems a little redundant in the face of the fabulous National Family History Month calendar.  Please do make sure you check it out first as the list below will really only be some highlights and other bits and bobs that I have rather hurriedly put together, with my usual obvious biases :) Friday 7 August 10am QFHS Family Tree Maker® (FTM) User Group At each meeting, we demonstrate the Family Tree Maker program. What's New?

Image
I'm on duty today at QFHS .  It's very quiet.  Just one happy, but possibly over-serviced member, with three volunteers to look after him - all of us working away at our family history. Honestly if you want to come to the library when it's quiet, Sunday afternoons seem to be the "go".  I love coming to the library every month.  I always get to see the new additions to the library (as pictured above). Look at all these lovely books!  What's not to love?   And for those of you who are particularly interested in Brisbane history, I am delighted to report that the book (that came out at Christmas time I think) - Lost Brisbane and surrounding areas 1860-1960 by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland in partnership with QBD The Bookshop is now on sale at QBD for $29.99 (a saving of 57% the QBD website tells me).  I couldn't resist. 350 pages of photos of Brisbane.  The first 100 pages or so are of the city, then onto South ...

Sepia Saturday 215: 15 February 2014

Alan from Sepia Saturday says: Our theme image this week features a picture postcard view of Jamaica Street, Glasgow (from the National Gallery of Scotland stream on Flickr Commons). I am not expecting people to match the Glasgow theme, or indeed the Jamaica theme, although knowing the resources and imagination of Sepians, I wouldn't be too surprised if some people took up such a challenge. The thing that came to my mind when I first saw the image was the crowds : we always tend to think of crowded streets as being something new, something twenty-first century, but clearly that isn't the case. Crowds, huh? Well the first photo that came to mind was this one.... 1954 Victoria Road Drummoyne, Sydney  - Queen's visit to Australia On the back is my mother's handwriting as follows: I Googled images of Victoria Road Drummoyne and found this link from 2011 - so we're looking at about 206 Victoria Road or thereabouts.  What was the Comm...
