#A-ZChallenge - A is for Acquisition, Atlas and Architecture

Image
In typical frog fashion, I have decided to jump on the A-Z Blogging bandwagon at the screaming last minute.  So there was no time for a theme reveal.  It will have to be revealed here, today, in my first post. I really agonized over which theme to choose but I have decided to go with Building a Genealogy or Family History Library.  I am doing this from a completely personal perspective - more of a window on my own personal library.  It's a reflection on the books or resources I have or would like to have in my library.  I hope this helps those that might be looking for suggestions to complement their own collection or those who are just starting out.  Please keep in mind that this is also from an Australian perspective and also someone who has a very WAS or white Anglo Saxon background.   And so to the letter A - which I have decided is for Acquisition, Atlases and Architecture. Acquisition   This term is used often in library-land an...

An afternoon in the library

Image
Yesterday afternoon I was on duty at the QFHS Library together with Ken and Judith.  The lovely Lyn was there too, beavering away checking duplicate microfiche.  It was very quiet - just a couple (allright, three) other members doing their research. The library looks really great now.  There's been a bit of a re-shuffle and things look much more open. The front desk has been moved around to face you as you walk in the door giving library assistants much more room to sit together and more of a profile so you know who is on duty.   There are new lockers for members to use for their bags et al.  They look a bit scary at first but a friendly library assistant will show you how to use them.  Just choose a four digit code and away you go. As part of the cleanup, there is a display of enticing journals that are being given away for FREE in the kitchen! And of course all the recent additions to the library are on display so you can see wha...

Genealogy Libraries - 52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy

Image
Week 8 – Genealogy Libraries : Genealogy libraries (and dedicated departments in regular libraries) are true treasures in the family history community.  Tell us about your favourite genealogy library. What or who makes it special? Well you probably know what I’m going to say already but yes, the QFHS library at Gaythorne is my favourite Genealogy library. And yes, my experience is very narrow, I realise.  I wish I could astound you with facts and figures about the collection but they are not at my fingertips. Suffice it to say, that I find it pretty hard to beat. You can find the library here. Amongst thousands of records, researchers also have access to: Ancestry (Library Edition) Emerald Ancestors FindMyPast – Australasia FindMyPast – UK FindMyPast – Ireland The Genealogist World Vital Records You can search the catalogue here. The LDS Film Service is available here too.  Don't forget that you can order ...
