Alan from Sepia Saturday says: The title of this old photograph - which comes from the Flickr Commons stream of the National Archives of Estonia - is "Eveline Maydell making a silhouette, with her models. Indianapolis 1931" Eveline Adelheid von Maydell (1890 - 1962) was a German-born silhouette artist who lived in the USA from 1922 onwards. She was described as being ambidextrous : a Milwaukee newspaper article from 1942 said "she sketches and designs with her left hand and with her right snips with minute scissors the silhouettes..." Alan from Sepia Saturday says: Our theme image this week features a picture postcard view of Jamaica Street, Glasgow (from the National Gallery of Scotland stream on Flickr Commons). I am not expecting people to match the Glasgow theme, or indeed the Jamaica theme, although knowing the resources and imagination of Sepians, I wouldn't be too surprised if some people took up such a challenge. The thing that came to my mind when I first saw the image was the crowds : we always tend to think of crowded streets as being something new, something twenty-first century, but clearly that isn't the case. Crowds, huh? I'm being a tad cheeky here because I don't know if my grandfather did in fact go to PNG but.... I found these photos in his album so I'm having a bit of a think and an explore and an investigation to try and discover what on earth they could be about. I don't know when these photos were taken but I'm guessing in the 1930s.   On the back of this photo is the word " Medang ".   The other clue in the photo is of course the name of the boat which I am reading as Macdhu. When I look up Macdhu on Trove I find lots of references to a boat but particularly between 1930-1939 with many falling around 1933, 1937 and 1938.
