#52Ancestorsin52Weeks 30/52 Owen/John McLoughlin ?

My maternal grandfather Tom McLoughlin at the end of the back row on the right 1912 This week is going to be a very short post indeed.  Normally I have quite a swag of material about each of my ancestors but this is where my McLoughlin stops as it were. I wanted to write today about Patrick McLoughlin's father Owen McLoughlin.  I wrote about Patrick back in May here. Patrick's death certificate says that his parents were Owen McLoughlin and Bridget Sweeney. On his marriage certificate it states that his father's name was Owen McLoughlin and that he was a labourer. The only birth I have been able to find to a Bridget Sweeney and a McLoughlin is a Patrick to a John McLaughlin and Bridget Sweeney in Templeboy, Sligo as per this blogpost here .  Now - the question is if this John is also known as Owen.   What do you think? Is it too big a leap? There's a bit of me that says let's go back to basics and remind ourselves of what the original research question wa...

Wedding Wednesday

Image
Welcome to Wedding Wednesday. I was going through some photos last month with my father.  We were trying to find photos of one of the houses we used to live in but could not find very many which was a great mystery in its own right.  The only ones I had were black and white and quite old.  We're not sure what happened to the more recent ones after the renovations were completed.  Sigh. In the process though, I put together an album for him of all the photos that I thought used to belong to him or were of his family.  Photos have got mixed up over the years as albums decayed and so he handed these back to me and said: "I don't know who these people are."   Hmmm...so they must have been from my mother's side of the family...were they Wingfields/Forfars, old school friends or McLoughlins? Luckily I have cousins on both sides and the lovely cousin Marilyn replied to a message on Facebook and identified the parties to the marriage.  I suspect th...

Fab Feb Photo Collage - Day 24

Patrick McLoughlin c. 1899-1901 Look at this fantastic photo.  How lucky am I to have a copy of it? This is the back of the photo. That's my mother's writing in the blue.  I'm not sure who owns the brown writing.  I'm thinking Annie and Mary, John McLoughlin's older sisters.  John McLoughlin was my maternal great-grandfather.  His older brother Patrick was born in 1865. He looks a reasonably young man here so I'm thinking the photo was taken in the 1880s. This source indicates that the studio was active from 1899-1912.  However I understand from checking the indexes to NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages that Patrick died in 1901.  I must order his death certificate.   I have looked for his name on the Nominal Roll of the Sudan and Boer War but without success.  So I'm at a bit of a loss to know what uniform he is wearing and what he is doing. The photos and discussion on the State Archives website was...
