Fab Photo Collage Festival - Day Fifteen

Ted and his mother - Ted aged 22 c1922

Don't you think this is an interesting photo?

The clothes they are wearing are incredibly plain ... and yet she has a fur draped across her lap.

I really wish there was an expert in costume or fashion who could help me here.

Ted's suit looks almost Chinese or artisan like - someone help me here.

What do you think?

He was married to Ethel Carrett in 1924 and at that time was described as a Draftsman.

And I want to know what that big B is on Eleanor's collar.

Ooh, so many questions.....

Now in my search to try and identify the kind of suit that Edwin is wearing I have found this page on the V & A's site.

This site also looks amazing. It gave me the idea that perhaps Ted is wearing a band uniform.  Maybe Eleanor is too.

I would appreciate any other suggestions in terms of resources.

Did they play instruments?

the 'B' seems to be 2-colours, maybe embroidery?
were they followers of Booth's Salvationists and in the band?

Kristin, I'm beginning to sound like a record - "I'll have to ask my father"...thankfully I'm having lunch with him today !

Ann, interestingly enough Ted's father was buried by a Salvation Army minister though I wasn't aware of them being in the Salvation Army. Hmmm food for thought.

'The Salvation Army was founded in London's East End in 1865'
As you well know by now, every tiny research window can open into a whole new field of information.
That B is starting to look like it is written on the collar and not actually a badge or pin or brooch.

Dear Ann,,,,well I had lunch with my father yesterday...he reminded me that my Gran and his father were married by a Salvation Army minister or whatever they're called. He thinks he may have ministered in Newcastle because that's where they had their honeymoon. Their reception apparently was at Central Station in Sydney -a very swish restaurant back then. Who knew? I am now really eager to keep following this Salvation Army trail. My father thought it a brooch but I'm thinking embroidery too.
