So here we are, at the end of the fifth year of Sepia Saturday, still going strong, still going sepia. Tradition dictates that we slow things down a little over the festive season with a single call covering both Christmas and New Year. And tradition dictates that it is a festive prompt. So here it is - families, festivities, trees, candles and wine. The image comes from the Flickr stream of the Archives of the Royal Family of Denmark. All you have to do is to post an old image linked to this seasonal theme (or not if you are a Sepia Scrooge) sometime over the festive season and link it to the list here.

Well I may not have the wine but I've got the candles.

Although there is no identifying information on this photo, I am dating it at 1959 chiefly because of the McCalls magazine that my paternal grandmother is holding.  It seems to be a Christmas issue and when I searched online for a McCalls magazine issue cover circa 1959...bingo! ...I found one for sale here and I think I've found a match.  

So there we have it, my mother (before she was married) and paternal grandparents celebrating Christmas in 1959.

Oh I do like being a family tree detective...I do I do.

Hi Alex, that was a clever bit of sleuthing! The magazine in your photo certainly looks like the one at WorthPoint. I would never have thought about dating a photograph by that method, but I will now!

Yes, well spotted Lorraine. That is a very groovy light fitting. I'm not familiar with the house...I'm guessing the dining room.

Clever Clever - good idea searching for that magazine. I wish more of my relatives had taken pictures with a magazine since they didn't bother to label or date anything. Merry Christmas, Alex!

Thanks Wendy! Yes I'm thinking that i will now include that feature in all photos from now on. Instead of "Say Cheese" it will be "Here, hold this magazine!"

Whatever else is going on around us, there is always some fun little thing - like sleuthing out the date of a magazine to answer a time-period question - to keep us busy in a just for the heckuvit, sort of way. And why not!?!! :))

I actually have some large trim size Christmas magazines from around the same time period. I can open the pages and step back in time, memories of looking at them over the years.

Oh yes, magazines and L.P. record sleeves have been a great help in dating a photo, but what a lovely happy picture anyway and one to treasure.

(That last part is often left out!)   Barbara Conner hanging up washing in Edinburgh     This is a photo of my mother hanging up the washing when we were living in Edinburgh in the 60s. I think my father took it to record what ordinary life was like at the time and to send back to the folks at home in Australia.  I'm sure my mother was not pleased but I am so grateful because you can see so much in this photo.  They had a kettle, something like a Sunbeam electric frypan.  I think I can spot a toaster and a radio up on the top shelf.  You can see that the glass came in milk bottles in those days and that the twin tub washing machine was in the kitchen.  There are canisters for things like tea and c...

Have you received an email from Ancestry lately suggesting you check out new traits?  DNA doesn't lie, so they say, but I beg to differ.   This will probably be an intensely boring post for those of you who don't really know me but I feel compelled to record my responses to the alleged traits for the amusement or interest of posterity and my family. 16 new traits have been identified for me.  There are 56 identified traits altogether. Let's tackle the new traits first: Competitiveness - likely to be competitive - influenced by my maternal side apparently.  Yes I agree but not with the side of the family.  If you'd asked me I would have said the paternal side.  My paternal grandmother was I believe intensely competitive - witness the articles I have written about her swimming prowess.  I'm struggling to recall any competitiveness displayed by my mother ...
