Research


Does your Society offer research services? For a fee? For free? Both? Do you have a research team or just one person? Do you have a policy or guidelines about what kinds of research you will or won't do for people? How do you present findings?  How else could you offer research services and raise the profile of your society?  We used to have one of our members presenting regularly on a radio station one night a week.  Would that work for your society?


Roster

A volunteer roster is a challenge to organize.  Who looks after yours?  Is there a back up plan?  





Review

Don't forget to review your Strategic Plan or direction Regularly, will you?  Remember change is constant.  What's working? What isn't working?  What needs to be tossed or changed?

Many of my societies offer a free bit of research annually as part of our membership benefits. Sometimes it's advice on how to proceed, other times it is actual research. This is one of or the recipients. If you do get some research done freely by a society don’t just “cut and run”. Do remember to thank the researcher.

Our long term local expert provides research services and the duty assistants each session are there to help with any queries. Luckily anyone in the building seems to be willing to lend a hand which does see people returning as they know they’ll be helped. Our local experts have also done research for community organisations which is excellent publicity for the group.
Review - vital for renewal.

Hi Molly, Pauleen and Carmel - thank you for your faithful readership :) It is so appreciated rather than just speaking into the void ! Molly that is such a great offer - huh? We can always do with a fresh pair of eyes on our family history. And yes Pauleen, the excitement of finding a new trail can sometimes make us forget basic manners. Carmel I like the idea of research for local community organizations. So often just a friendly hand and enthusiasm gets non-members over the line in terms of joining up.

52 Ancestors in 52 weeks - Week 3 - Favourite Photo

      The theme for Week 3 is "Favorite Photo." Amy Johnson Crow has devised these prompts and you can participate too by signing up here. Tell the story of a favorite photo: Who is in it, when and where it was taken, and why it was taken. (That last part is often left out!)   Barbara Conner hanging up washing in Edinburgh     This is a photo of my mother hanging up the washing when we were living in Edinburgh in the 60s. I think my father took it to record what ordinary life was like at the time and to send back to the folks at home in Australia.  I'm sure my mother was not pleased but I am so grateful because you can see so much in this photo.  They had a kettle, something like a Sunbeam electric frypan.  I think I can spot a toaster and a radio up on the top shelf.  You can see that the glass came in milk bottles in those days and that the twin tub washing machine was in the kitchen.  There are canisters for things like tea and c...

Have you received an email from Ancestry lately suggesting you check out new traits?  DNA doesn't lie, so they say, but I beg to differ.   This will probably be an intensely boring post for those of you who don't really know me but I feel compelled to record my responses to the alleged traits for the amusement or interest of posterity and my family. 16 new traits have been identified for me.  There are 56 identified traits altogether. Let's tackle the new traits first: Competitiveness - likely to be competitive - influenced by my maternal side apparently.  Yes I agree but not with the side of the family.  If you'd asked me I would have said the paternal side.  My paternal grandmother was I believe intensely competitive - witness the articles I have written about her swimming prowess.  I'm struggling to recall any competitiveness displayed by my mother ...
