Q is for Quartermaster

Q is for Quartermaster

My eyes are dim, I cannot see....from doing too many blog posts for this challenge!

Do you remember the Quartermaster's Song?  We used to sing it whenever we went on long car trips usually to the Coast.  It was a lot of fun.

I was interested to read that one of the Quartermaster's duties was to steer the ship.  Who knew? I thought the job was all about food.  But then I do tend to think that everything is about food. Or navigating my way to food.

Boys under instruction at a helm, at the Royal Hospital School, Greenwich

Here are some boys under instruction at Greenwich about how to find food.  One of them might have even become a Quartermaster.

How are you going with your Blogging from A-Z challenge?  Are you still on course?

My eyes are dim but I have reached my destination. Thank goodness. The A-Z was a huge challenge for this unprepared old girl. Next time (if there is one) I'll start early.

At our Guide wilderness camps we had a quartermaster - she bought all the food AND cooked it. I loved the one I had at my camp, she made the best coffee and camp food on the open fire. One year there was a young leader trying for her camp leader certificate so she took my place running the camp of first year Guides, and I was her quartermaster. First time for me! It was fun learning to cook regular meals on the fire. After lunch we went swimming in the river and another seasoned quartermaster asked me if I had my stew on for dinner yet. "No! It's only 1 pm!" I said. She said hers had been simmering for an hour already. I didn't put mine on til about 3:30. At about 5pm we saw the other quartermaster and her girls in a funeral procession through the woods, out to bury their stew. They had to have peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. We had the yummiest stew I ever made!

Dear Jill - Well done you! Excellent work. It has been a challenge hasn't it?

Yay, a nautical word I actually recognize. And yes, I'm on course.
You mean everything is NOT about food? Oh my!

I'm still on course with the A to Z Challenge. I was beginning to think that I would miss a few days because we keep having storms here. Our county is one of the 9 counties declared a disaster area due to flooding and we're expecting even more rain over the next few days. The freeway is underwater between our home and our daughter's university, which is also flooded, so we can't even get to her. Thanks for any prayers you might offer on her behalf.

I am working through commenting on blogs and will start my R post shortly for tomorrow morning. How are things going for you with the challenge?

Have a blessed day!
