Sepia Saturday 355: 18th February 2017

Feeding the pigeons- Royal Library Denmark

This week's photo is an easy prompt for me.  I found this photo of Cecil and Gladys Maloney in Trafalgar Square London.  


There is no date on this photo.  Would anyone like to hazard a guess?  

 Cecil and Gladys used to live at Gulgowra near Lue in NSW.  Then in about 1954 they moved to Church Street in Mudgee.  Cecil died in 1974.  

 I reckon this photo was taken somewhere between 1950 and 1960.

Looks like early 50s to me just as I was entering my teens.

Well, I think my mother had a dress of similar material maybe in the late 50s. I can't tell about shoes, nor fur. But that double breasted suit should also be a clue for any fashionistas out there. Everyone in the photo looks as if they're also posing!

I’d plump for a bit later, possibly early to mid 60s. We need Photo Sleuth for this one. It’s a perfect match for the prompt. Well done.

Cecil and Gladys could well have been standing in another part of the Square at the same time as I was feeding those pigeons :-) I think the two schoolboys in your photo were interested in the pigeons.

Everyone seems to have pigeons in the park photos. I love Jo's idea that she might be in your photo and your couple in hers. That would be the ultimate Sepia Saturday tale if some weekend Alan's Aunt Miriam shows up in someone else's blog photo.

The time frame does seem to be in the early '50s judging by his suit & hat and her dress and shoes. And those certainly are a full compliment of pigeons!

Spot on match for this week's prompt. I would put the date as mid 50's. Is that a small hat that Gladys is wearing on the back of her head - reminiscent of the style worn by the young Queen then. 'The fact Gkadys is wearing a fur stole and the other women in the background are wearing heavy coats suggests it is not summery weather. The two young boys in short trousers and long socks are reflecting the style then that my brother wore - before the right of passage into long trousers around the age of 13.

(That last part is often left out!)   Barbara Conner hanging up washing in Edinburgh     This is a photo of my mother hanging up the washing when we were living in Edinburgh in the 60s. I think my father took it to record what ordinary life was like at the time and to send back to the folks at home in Australia.  I'm sure my mother was not pleased but I am so grateful because you can see so much in this photo.  They had a kettle, something like a Sunbeam electric frypan.  I think I can spot a toaster and a radio up on the top shelf.  You can see that the glass came in milk bottles in those days and that the twin tub washing machine was in the kitchen.  There are canisters for things like tea and coffee.   When MyHeritage brought out the
