Funeral Friday - Walter Richard (Dick) Hinde

Today marks the 89th anniversary of Walter Hinde's death.  Walter Hinde was my husband's great-grandfather.

He was born in Brisbane on 22 August 1875 in Arthur Street Fortitude Valley.  His mother was Emma LORD and, while he took the surname of George HINDE, Emma and George did not marry until 1878. Identifying Walter's father is one of our BRICKWALLS! :)

George Hinde had come out to Queensland with his brother James on the Derbyshire in July 1874.  The Hindes were from Olney in Buckinghamshire, as were the Lords. To find out more about the Lords and their pub-owning in Olney go here.

I have an account of the Hinde brothers from Jess Zimmerman which was passed on to me from other descendants. This is a small extract:

"My father, James Hinde and brother George were born in the town of Olney in Buckinghamshire, England.  They decided to emigrate to Australia hearing of plenty of gold here.  They arrived in Brisbane by a sailing ship "Derbyshire" on 15th July 1874.  It took six months to come to Australia as they kept striking into gales and cyclones, also scarlet fever attacked the overburdened ship and there were 16 buried at sea.  Brisbane was a small town then with few shops and houses and a hotel in Queen Street.  Where the town hall is and down the Valley was a creek and dense scrub.  Wages were 5 to 15 shillings per week.  So James, only 18 years of age selected a block of land at Rosewood, near Ipswich.  It was drought-stricken for years.  Hearing there was land for selection in the Nerang Valley, he came and saw the lovely clear water at Gilston.  Their neighbours in England, the Lord family had just arrived in Brisbane and he advised them to come to Gilston.  He then forfeited his land at Rosewood.  Brother George went to work at a mine.  He was an experienced Blacksmith and also a Vet.  The mine used horses to pull the trucks on line lines out of the mine....George came to Gilston and started a Blacksmith shop down the paddock in Lord's place.  He married Emma Lord 23 March 1878.  They lived in a little house down from the Gilston school.  The house was called Gunya/Gundie by the school children. "

I found these articles about George Hinde on Trove.

The Lords came to Brisbane on the Ramsey from London via Queenstown, arriving 8 July 1875. Emma, aged 17, came out with her parents William and Emma and siblings Joseph, aged 14, George, aged 11, William aged 9, Harry aged 7 and Elizabeth aged 8. Walter was born shortly afterwards.

And so here are the articles I could find on Trove about the death of Walter Richard (Dick) Hinde, son of George HINDE and Emma LORD.

I am interested that Walter is referred to as Richard or Dick but the name does not appear on any certificates.  It would be good to know when he started using this moniker.  Is this a clue for his paternity?
