  Week 15/52 Robert FORFAR – 1817 - ? Ahnentafel Number 56 Context for discovery: This biography was written as part of the 52 ancestors in 52 weeks exercise devised by Amy Johnson Crow.   You can join in too here . The theme for this month is Check It Out and this week is How Do You Spell That?   Robert was my 3 rd great-grandfather.  FORFAR is not an easy surname to search for, mostly because there is a place called Forfar in Scotland and the word can also be used to describe a type of fabric or linen.   This makes it quite difficult to search for in newspaper articles. Sigh. Take a look at this 1905 photograph (from the collection of the Library of Congress) of the pier and harbour of the English port of Littlehampton. What you see is a tall ship and a remarkably small lighthouse. Or you might want to focus on the high windmill and the squat little tugboat. So if you want a theme for Sepia Saturday 188 (post your posts on or around Saturday 3 August 2013) you could look for photographs that bring together large and small, or big and little. Or, there again, you could focus on the sea, ships, lighthouse, piers or men leaning against bicycles. The survey vessel HMS Waterwitch, during steam trial, Stokes Bay [Portsmouth], June 1894 Source   Hume Family Collection, UQ Fryer Library 10, Album 11, Page 23 Copyright expired My father is currently cruising around the South and East China Sea and it reminded me that 115 years ago, his grandfather was also sailing in that general area on a very different kind of boat.   Edwin Conner was on board the HMS Waterwitch .   Wikipedia records several incarnations of the HMS Waterwitch .   This one is the one that fits my ancestor's timeline.  Edwin Conner's service record shows him being on board from 12 March 1910 to 4 April 1911.  I have spent much of today trying to determine what HMS Waterwitch was up to at that time.
