Here's what's on around Brisbane and Hughenden this week.

Saturday 11 July


 Our members share information on researching Scottish forebears including resources, techniques, history, and customs. Together we have knowledge of particular regions and occupations. Every meeting includes an opportunity for discussion of members’ brickwalls, particularly those of new members.


Our talks include research resources and techniques together with aspects of Scottish life that affected our families: where they went and what they did.

Sunday 12 July



The Family Tree Maker Group aims to offer mutual support to any member in using Family Tree Maker software in their family history research. It provides information and help to  members in obtaining the best use of their investment in FTM.
Meetings are held on the second Sunday of the odd months of the year, unless otherwise advertised. 
The Resource Centre opens at 10.30am and closes at 2.30pm. The meeting starts at 10.30am, usually running until 12 noon. The Legacy Group meets at 1.00pm.
No computer experience is required, and we can advise on associated topics such as buying a computer, and using the internet.

10:00am-1:00pm SLQ's First World War Treasures: a white gloves experience - at Diggers Entertainment Centre Hughenden

A unique opportunity to put on the white gloves and join us for this hands-on look at some of State Library’s precious original First World War materials. Get up close and personal with a curated selection of First World War treasures from SLQ, such as letters, diaries and photographs. A State Library collection specialist will guide you through the story and significance of carefully selected First World War collection items. Morning tea provided.

Learn how to research your family history with the genealogy resources available in the library. Presented by Elenor Chambers.

Does your organisation want to share local First World history and stories online?

Representatives from your organisation are invited to participate in this workshop to explore how digitised content is made more discoverable and engaging in the online world.

At this workshop, you will be introduced to a range of online tools available which will enable the promotion and sharing of collections online. Learn how to connect your community to engage with these resources and encourage wider contribution to Anzac centenary commemoration projects online.

Please note: this is a 1.5 day workshop, running from 9am-4pm, 15 Jul and 9am-1pm, 16 Jul. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided.

This event is part of Q ANZAC 100: Memories for a New Generation, proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

Warren Jolly, grandson of William, will speak about the Grey Street Brisbane that was named William Jolly Bridge to honour William and the work he undertook as Mayor of the Town of Windsor, Lord Mayor of Brisbane and a Member of Parliament.

7:00-9:00pm Kenmore and District Historical Society Inc. at Kenmore Library



Colin Hester of the Mt Crosby Historical Society will be presenting the history of the  which was commenced in the 1890s after a decision in the 1880s to draw a water supply from the Brisbane River. It is a fascinating story of 19th century engineering and is linked to the need to provide clean drinking water for a growing city.  Colin will focus on the impact on Kenmore and surrounding areas.

Colin will also feature the story of the work of laying the pipes; initially the pipes, laid along the side of Moggill Road, were 24 inches in diameter. There were six upgrades of the size of the pipes to cope with Brisbane’s increasing population.

Looks like you might be busy over the next week. Thanks for the info. Keep trying to find time to do family history but alas other things take priority.

Tell the story of a favorite photo: Who is in it, when and where it was taken, and why it was taken. (That last part is often left out!)   Barbara Conner hanging up washing in Edinburgh     This is a photo of my mother hanging up the washing when we were living in Edinburgh in the 60s. I think my father took it to record what ordinary life was like at the time and to send back to the folks at home in Australia.  I'm sure my mother was not pleased but I am so grateful because you can see so much in this photo.  They had a kettle, something like a Sunbeam electric frypan.  I think I can spot a toaster and a radio up on the top shelf.  You can see that the glass came in milk bottles in those days and that the twin tub washing machine was in the kitchen.  There are canisters for things like tea and c...

Have you received an email from Ancestry lately suggesting you check out new traits?  DNA doesn't lie, so they say, but I beg to differ.   This will probably be an intensely boring post for those of you who don't really know me but I feel compelled to record my responses to the alleged traits for the amusement or interest of posterity and my family. 16 new traits have been identified for me.  There are 56 identified traits altogether. Let's tackle the new traits first: Competitiveness - likely to be competitive - influenced by my maternal side apparently.  Yes I agree but not with the side of the family.  If you'd asked me I would have said the paternal side.  My paternal grandmother was I believe intensely competitive - witness the articles I have written about her swimming prowess.  I'm struggling to recall any competitiveness displayed by my mother ...
