Tuesday's Tip - Copyright Resources

Image
Last Saturday I was invited to attend a Library Assistants' Meeting at my local society - QFHS .  We attend these about every 6 months just to keep up to date with new procedures/systems and to hear about specialist topics.  Saturday's specialist topics were Irish Research, Copyright and Maps.  See what you miss out on by not being a Library Assistant? I was particularly interested in the Copyright session because it reminded me of the last session of GeniAus' GeneaGala Hangout the previous weekend where the topic of copyright had been raised.  The session on Saturday at QFHS was more about Copyright in Libraries rather than for Family Historians but it was still interesting and raised some important issues. Copyright is an area that I'm sure fills most of us with fear and loathing and yet we do need to know about it so that we stay on the right side of the law, maintain good relations with all and sundry and ensure our integrity and reputation as family ...

Sepia Saturday 295 : 5 September 2015

Image
For Sepia Saturday this week, Alan asks that you:  "cut through the fog, reach out into the void, build bridges between different lands and, most important of all, not to miss the bus. Whatever prompt you care to find in our theme image this week, just link it to an old photograph of your own and tell us about it." There is a series of photos from my mother's photo album and I am reaching out into the void here as they were taken before I was born.  I did sit down with my godmother about 20 years ago and ask for identification of people on some of them.  As a point of interest, my godmother doesn't feature in them...maybe she had gone overseas by then.  And I have no idea who the men are in the photos - brothers maybe?  So we're talking 1950s. On the back of the waterfall photo is written, I suspect in my mother's handwriting.... Liz, Carol, Wilma, Is, Lae, Aud Liz and Carol were my mother's bridesmaids.  I know that much.  Basically I...

Spring Clean Your Blog!

Image
About this time last year, I suggested we all "Pimp" our blogs. Pimp is the kind of phrase guaranteed to make my mother spin in her grave and borrowed from my "may-as-well-be son-in-law", Dan, who is mad about cars. Pimp means to kit out, glam up or decorate your car the way you really want it to look.  Of course the term "pimp" has other less salubrious connotations which we will steadfastly ignore for the purposes of this post. For those of us in the southern hemisphere, the 1st of September means spring has sprung.  The jasmine is out in my backyard and the weather is warmer. The doona hasn't come off the bed yet but it won't be long before Summer is here. This week, I borrowed a book from my local library by Robin Houghton called The Golden Rules of Blogging: The Do's and Don'ts every Blogger Needs to Know .   I reviewed it on goodreads  as follows: This is a beautifully designed little book. Short and easy to read, it presen...

Sepia Saturday293 - 22 August 2015

This week's prompt from Sepia Saturday gave one much food for thought - pun entirely intended. One thought much about whether one had photos of cafes or canteens or shopping but one realised that one has posted them before here.   I decided instead to focus on historical photos from Queensland and boy, did I get distracted again.    First of all I found this photo: Employees at the Hope's Body Works canteen , Fortitude Valley, Brisbane - courtesy of John Oxely Library State Library of Queensland. It's pretty amazing - right?  My first thought was - Oh God!  How hot would that be in summer????? That building is clad in corrugated iron.  It must have been winter when this was taken - the workers are wearing fair isle vests and overalls and flanellette shirts. No-one looks too happy.  Check out those enormous teapots and the enamel mugs.  I reckon all the paper on the table is from the local chippy or fish and chip shop. It's f...
