Poppies for Remembrance Day
Taken at Coriole Vineyard McLaren Vale South Australia

Yesterday I received the latest issue of the journal of the Queensland Family Historian - the journal of the Queensland Family History Society Inc.  It is always jam packed with all sorts of information about additions to the library, members interests, seminars and news.  This particular issue features articles written in honour of Remembrance Day.  They cover all sorts of topics from Avenues of Honour and the Battle of the Somme to biographies of members' ancestors who fought in the Great War.   The journal is published quarterly and is just one of the many great reasons to join the Society.  If you were interested in submitting an article for consideration by the Editorial Committee, the following deadlines may be of interest:

15 March
15 June
15 September
15 December

To join the Society or find out more about its activities, click here. If you are a newbie to family history and don't know where to begin, you might want to consider signing up for the beginner's course in research being offered next year over 6 weeks.  For more details go here.

Remembrance Day falls on Wednesday next week. We are a bit excited at work because we are launching our mobile phone app today which the wonderful folks at Zero Blink put together for us. Keep your eye out for it in your Play or Apple Store.  It's the Moreton Bay WWI Once Upon a War Time App. The App allows you to listen to the stories of three fictional characters, find real soldiers from the region, explore local memorials and discover more about an Australian Digger's uniform.  The App was made possible through a Queensland Government Anzac Centenary Grant.  To check out our WWI resources on the library website and catalogue, click here.

I found this rather moving advertisement for Bell Canada on YouTube. It sums up the modern approach to Remembrance Day and hints at a bit of what we're hoping to achieve with our App...If you want to find out more about the history of Remembrance Day in Australia and what it means, The Australian War Memorial has a summary here.

There's lots to do in Brisbane this week family and local history wise - no less than nine local history or family history groups are meeting this week that I know of.  You can find out about all sorts of topics from Post War Architecture to DNA to Irish Immigration.  If I have missed something please comment below so that others can find out about it.

I hope you find something here of interest, meet like-minded folk in your pursuits and above all carve out some peace in your busy day.
