Now isn't this dreadful - I'm not sure which is which.

I suspect George Henry Charles is the one on the right.   Let's have a look at a close up of his face at Millie's wedding photo again...

Tricky huh?

We might be able to reach better conclusions by looking at their service records on the NAA website.

Charles enlisted on 15 May 1916 at the age of 25.  At the time he was 5ft 71/4 inches with fair hair and blue eyes - a bricklayer turned Gunner.  

He was wounded in a field in France a year later.

George enlisted 8 May 1916 at the age of 37 standing 5 foot 7 and 3/4 inches with brown to grey hair and grey eyes.  A builder turned driver.

So...I was wrong....George is on the left.  

I'm not sure exactly when this photo was taken 1917 or 1918.  

Don't you wish they were alive today to tell us what they were up to and where they had been?

George died 27 December 1953 at the age of 74.  According to his death certificate he died at the State Hospital and Home at Lidcombe.  Before that he had been living at 71 Ewart Street Dulwich Hill.  He was a builder and had been born in Dubbo to George Henry Charles Carrett -another builder.  George's mother's name was Daisy Stores.  He married Daisy Taylor at the age of 23.  Children alive at the time of his death were Ethel 49, George H.C. 47, Daisy 47, Irene 45, Oswald S. 43 and Nora 39.  The 1 female deceased would have been Millie.  His son Oswald of Wombyne Street, Gilgandra was the informant.  George was cremated at Rookwood 29 December according to the rites of the Church of England.

 Charles died in 1964.


I think this must be the last photo we have of George.  He is shown here with his wife Daisy Mildred and daughter Daisy Minnie.

They look like there was more than 1/2 inch difference in their heights, don't they?

Do you know Kristin - I thought the same thing!! Is one standing on a box or was the measuring stick out at the recruitment centre?

I am looking for relatives for Louisa Agnes CARRETT (Nee LARSON)

I am aware she married Charles Arthur Stanley CARRETT.

There is a gentleman who has located an old boating licence of Louisas from 1942. It is in very good condition and he is wanting to return it to family members.

The card has details of her appearance on it.

NFHM Blogging Challenge - Week 1

Week 1 – Sunday 7 August  August is National Family History Month in Australia and Australian Family and Local History bloggers thought it would be a great idea to have a - Blogging Challenge!  Everyone is welcome to join in, even if you don't live in Australia, we'd love to hear from you and hear your stories. Census Night in Australia is 9 August this year and so we decided that Census stories should be our first week's theme.    The State Library of Queensland Census and Muster Records Info guide tells us that:  " prior to 2001 it was Australian federal government policy to destroy all name-identified census returns for privacy reasons, and all returns between 1901 and 2001 have been destroyed." Lovely Genimate Pauleen Cass from Family History across the seas came up with this great meme. Wanna play along?  Here are the questions: What’s the earliest movie you can remember? My mother told me that the first movie I ever saw was A Hard Day's Night with the Beatles but the first I can remember is probably Fantasia. Where did you go to the movies (place or type of venue)? For the most part, when I remember movie going days I'm thinking of Canberra. There were a couple of places to go in the 70s - there was a pretty uninspiring cinema in the heart of town - the Civic - but it had all the big movies so I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang there and Sound of Music I think.  Our favourite cinema by far was the Center Cinema and I have blogged about it and other cinemas/drive-ins here.
